A marketing audit is a check of your marketing and sales system to find where money is being lost: ads, funnel, sales process and numbers. An audit answers the question "what is wrong" and shows the next step.
When one IT startup came to us, it had paid its previous team $6,000. The audit showed that only $348 of that went to ads. With us, $845 in ads brought $4,000+ in sales in 1 month, and the sales cycle shrank from 20–25 days to 10 days.
In short:
- An audit shows where money is being lost.
- What gets checked: budget, funnel, sales, numbers.
- The result: a specific plan, not general advice.
When do you need an audit?
- Ads are running, but there are no sales.
- There are leads, but they are low quality or don't turn into sales.
- An agency or team gives you reports, but the numbers are unclear.
- The sales cycle is too long.
What does an audit check?
- Budget. Where the money actually went: ads, services, production.
- Ad accounts. Audiences, creatives, campaign structure.
- Funnel. Lead form, landing page, lead → MQL → meeting → sale conversions.
- Sales process. Call speed, script, meeting, commercial proposal (KP).
- Analytics. Is there a CRM, is the source recorded, what the reporting looks like.
What was found in the startup case?
The main problem was the budget. Of the $6,000, only $348 went to ads. With a budget like that, no test gives a result.
The second was the sales process. The cycle was 20–25 days. After the funnel and sales were rebuilt, it dropped to 10 days.
Not only marketing
Sometimes the problem isn't in marketing at all. I wrote on LinkedIn about a business with $70M in annual revenue that was running at a loss because of a mistake in cost calculation. No matter how many sales marketing brings in, if every sale is a loss, the system doesn't work.
That is why an audit also looks at unit economics: CAC, average check, margin. Details: CAC and LTV.
Where do a great many people go wrong?
The mistake is to write the problem off as "the agency was bad" and go to a new agency with the same system.
The right way is audit first, strategy second. If you don't know where the problem is, you can't solve it by swapping the agency.
Conclusion
In short, an audit is a diagnosis before treatment.
- Check where the budget went.
- Calculate the funnel conversions.
- Listen to the sales process.
- Look at the unit economics.
- Then build the strategy.
